Samuel Carel de Hoop, de man van Hendrina de Jong was in 1937 overleden, heel kort na zijn pensionering. Sam was begonnen als diamantsnijder maar had zich door zelfstudie opgewerkt tot gymnastiekleraar aan de Vierde Driejarige HBS in Amsterdam. Naast zijn baan, had hij van 1906 tot 1918 ook een eigen sportschool, aan de Maarten Jansz. Kosterstraat, vlakbij de Amstel. Op de gevel staat nog altijd Turngebouw De Hoop.
