Josef Strauss en zijn vrouw Margarethe Strauss-Klonower vluchtten uit Krefeld naar Arnhem. Zij richtten in 1937 aan de Betuwestraat 12a een dassenfabriek op, Strauss & Co. Margarethe zorgde voor de productie, Josef voor de verkoop en boekhouding.
