Eva de Leeuw, born on 10 August 1913, flower binder and oldest daughter of Hartog and Cato de Leeuw, married Simon Andries van Gelder in Amsterdam on 22 April 1936, who was born in Eibergen on 21 June 1911 as the son of Abraham van Gelder and Rachel Frank. After their marriage they first lived on the Tugelaweg 15 parterre in Amsterdam-East, but as of 25 October 1940 they moved into a house on Voltaplein 30 hs. Eva’s unmarried sister Reintje moved in with them that same day. Eva and Simon Andries had meanwhile given birth to a daughter on 15 April 1937: Rachel.
Simon Andries van Gelder's family was one of the first to be called up for the so-called "expansion of work under police supervision in Germany". They arrived in Westerbork on 19 July 1942. On 24 July they were deported to Auschwitz where Eva de Leeuw and her daughter Rachel van Gelder were immediately killed on 26 July 1942. Simon Andries van Gelder, however, was first employed as a forced laborer in Auschwitz. He lost his life there on 29 September 1942.
