Since 1814 twelve main synagogues existed in the Netherlands, one for each district.
The so-called ring synagogues were subordinate to these main synagogues. Nowadays the Dutch-Jewish Main Synagogue refers primarily to the Jewish community in Amsterdam, although the synagogue in Arnhem is a main synagogue as well.
