Moeder Emma en dochter Trude (Gertrude) vertrekken in 1939 naar Amsterdam. Trude is lerares. Nadat haar moeder is opgepakt gaat Trude onderduiken en overleeft de oorlog. Ze vertrekt naar New York, keert terug naar Amsterdam en gaat later naar Keulen waar ze in 1975 sterft.
