Leonard Overweg was not regarded as a natural businessman. His real gift was for chemistry, for which he obtained 100% in his school-leaving examinations. Leonard also had an impressive knowledge of the Bible, and could tell all its stories from memory.

Leonard Overweg was married at Westerbork transit camp on 6 October 1942. His wife survived the war. He was a son of Nathan Overweg and Sara Lievenboom. He was a merchant by trade.
