Emanuel van West was a son of David van West and Keetje Cohen. Before the war, Emanuel had a government position as a telegram messenger. On 29 November 1926, he married Sientje Kloot. From December 1941 onwards, his wife was interned at the Jewish psychiatric institution Apeldoornse Bos. Because of this situation, Emanuel van West lived with his sister-in-law, Keetje Hilversum-Kloot, and her family.
